This Friday at 10am starts an awesome day and a half of football action on KCWI. It all starts with a rematch of last year’s 8-player championship, as Lenox (13-0) battles Armstrong-Ringsted (12-1). Lenox defeated Armstrong-Ringsted 34-32 in the most exciting game of last year’s championships. The Mustangs also finished runner-up in 2007, losing to Stanton. Lenox is 65-6 dating back to the start of the 2005 season. In their only other title game appearance, the Tigers lost to Glidden-Ralston in 2005.

At 2:00 on Friday, Southern Cal, Lake City (12-1), the defending Class A champs take on Newman Catholic of Mason City (12-1), who are making their first title game appearance. Newman Catholic coach Mike Dirksen (173-81) is in his 26th year as coach of the Knights, and finally made it to the championship game. Coach Dirksen is an Iowa Association Hall of Fame inductee this year, which happen during the 4A championship game, which will be, the most-intriguing and star-studded contest of the weekend.

Friday at 7pm Marshalltown (13-0) and their highly-decorated quarterback, Chanse Creekmur, tangle with Iowa City, City High (13-0) and someone named AJ Derby. I believe he’s the big recruit that’s going to stay in town and play for the University of Iowa next year. There “might” be some points scored in this one, folks. This will be Marshalltown’s first appearance in the title game.

And what an appearance it should be. Creekmur had two of the most prestigious passing games of the season in the state of Iowa. On October 9 he threw for 388 yards in a victory over Ames. Against Indianola a couple weeks later in the Bobcats substate win, he had “merely” 361 yards passing and five touchdowns, four of which went to receiver Jarred Carlson, who had 14 receptions for 200 yards. On the season Creekmur has thrown for 3,011 yards and 30 touchdowns. Oh by the way, he missed the first game of the season! Carlson for the year has 76 catches for 1,363 yards and 19 touchdowns. Hmm, coach Dan Sabers (81-20, 9th season) of City High might want to double-team Mr. Carlson.

Not to be outdone, Mr. Derby has some pretty impressive stats as well. AJ has thrown for only 1,515 yards and 20 touchdowns. But he’s also rushed for 670 yards and 13 touchdowns. Now we know why Iowa Hawkeye fans are foaming at the mouth over this kid – a Hawkeye quarterback that can run and pass? Crazy notion.

Moving to Saturday, it starts off with, who else? St. Albert, Council Bluffs (13-0), winners of the 1A title in 04, 06 and 07, and runner-up in 2003. The Falcons will battle South Winneshiek (12-1), entering their first title game. In contrast to the 4A game, this appears on paper to be a defensive slugfest. The South Winneshiek Warriors have given up an average of only 9.3 points a game. And the Falcons only 13.4 points a contest. But – each team also averages over 40 points scored a game. So, we’ll see which side of the ball wins out.

Then at 1pm, Solon (13-0) who scored 60 points in last year’s 2A championship game (a record number of points for a 2A playoff game) take on Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (13-0), making their first trip to the championship game. The Solon Spartans are on a 38-game winning streak, dating back to the start of the 2007 season. It’s their eighth trip to the title game since 1988. They’re the two-time defending 2A champs and were the runner-up in 2006. And they also have last year’s Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year, James Morris. The University of Iowa recruit has rushed for 2,033 and 36 touchdowns this season. I’d like to take this time to wish good luck to Boyden-Hull. The Nighthawks are undefeated but experience and talent are against them as they look to pull the upset. And finally at 4pm, you wanna talk about winning streaks? Harlan (13-0) had a 46-game regular season winning streak. Had. It was snapped last season. They have a “decent” coach. Curt Bladt is 345-35 in 32 years at Harlan. He’s only won 11 titles (12 overall for the school). If you thought Solon is a dynasty, you’re right, just not the biggest. This is the best Iowa High School football dynasty. The Cyclones have given up an average of 5.5 points a game this year. Holy Cow! And good luck to…the Pella Dutch (10-3), who are, say it again with me, making their first appearance in the championship game. If you thought Boyden-Hull over Solon would be an upset, Pella over Harlan in the 3A game would be monumental!

What a contrast in teams we have in this year’s games. 5 squads will be, once again say it with me, their first appearance in the championship game. But then there are also the schools you hear about every year – Solon, Harlan, Lenox, St. Albert and Iowa City High. Great players and great coaches. It should be a great couple days of football action on KCWI. Go Pella! (That’s the Dutch heritage coming out of me, plus I always rout for the underdog!)

This Saturday at 7pm the Northern Iowa Panthers battle the Western Illinois Leathernecks on KCWI. It's a must-win for UNI is they attempt to gain a spot in the FCS Playoffs. The Panthers are ranked 12th in the latest FCS Now Poll after tough losses to Southern Illinois and South Dakota State. What a great opportunity for the Panthers to get some exposure in central Iowa.

Senior quarterback Pat Grace leads an efficient offensive attack that had a lot of success moving up and down the field against Iowa in early September. That's right, Iowa. Currently the 4th ranked team in the BCS.

The Panthers (5-3, 3-2) were the preseason pick to win the Missouri Valley Conference. After the Iowa game, that looked like a pretty good pick. But turnovers have really hurt Northern Iowa the previous two weeks.

If the Panthers win out, they should be in the playoffs…and they should win out. The Leathernecks of Western Illinois are currently 1-7 (0-5 in the Mo Valley), with their lone victory coming in the opening game of the season.

Grace and the Panther offense should be ready to fire after shooting themselves in the foot in their last two games. Back in September, Pat was named a College Sporting News National All-star after an amazing victory. Grace accounted for 7 TDs, passed for 455 yards and led UNI to a 66-7 victory over South Dakota, while only playing only three plays into the second half. Grace passed for four scores and ran for three others in guiding the Panthers to a 52-7 lead with 8:23 left in the third quarter before departing the game.

With the Panthers in need of a victory to help secure their spot in the postseason, look for Saturday to be a long day for the Leathernecks inside the UNI-dome.
