Today's newsletter talks about the importance of making your commercials fun to watch. A strong interrupt...a surprise twist...talking to your customers how you would talk to your friends not 'ad-speak.' All of these combined make for commercials that are fun to watch, which in turn should make your customers want to do business with you. This commercial by The Rec Room Plus is a great example of a commercial that has a strong interrupt with a surprise twist and talks to customers the way you would talk to your neighbors. The commercial opens with Gaylon (owner) walking through his store and states, "Folks let's face it the weather this year has been $%*#@!!!!" His wife Michele is flabbergasted and says "Gaylon!" Of course we bleep the word and the way she says his name you can see that she has done this MANY times. The interrupt is great. You do a double take and think to yourself did he really just say what I think he said? The rest of the commercial plays out with the Rec Room Plus's The weather has been $@#@* sale. Product shots with price and item and closes with Michele saying "so get on out to the Rec Room Plus for the weather has been $@#* sale." Gaylon then drops his jaw at Michele's choice of language and the commercial ends. Controversial? Yes. Offensive to some? Yes. Fun to watch? Absolutely! Don't misunderstand what I am saying. I am not endorsing the use of swear words in every commercial. The timing was great. This spring was ultra rainy, then it got really hot and do you know what? The weather was crappy and this man needs to sell patio furniture. The commercial hit a nerve with a lot of people. Some complained, some laughed, but a lot of people went to his store and bought patio furniture. The commercial got results!
