On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 2001: Severe thunderstorms in southern Iowa produced very large hail with stones as large as 2.5 inches in diameter at Osceola, 3 inches in diameter at Otley, and 4 inches in diameter at Truro. Damage was widespread and extensive.

1939: Thunderstorms produced very heavy rain across portions of Sioux, Crawford, Shelby, Pottawattamie, and Audubon counties during the afternoon and evening hours. At Manilla in Crawford County an unofficial measurement of 4.36 inches of rain fell in just an hour and a half. At Irwin in Shelby County nearly 6 inches of rain was reported. Flooding of creeks, rivers, and low lying areas was widespread and disrupted train and automobile travel. In Audubon County it was the worst flood in at least a decade and the new Audubon CCC camp was flooded with water 4 feet deep when the Nishnabotna River overflowed its banks. The river reached a height of 5 feet above concrete bridges in western Audubon County and weakened a Rock Island Railroad bridge near Avoca in northeastern Pottawattamie County, where contemporary accounts reported that “at 3:05 am on the 4th, eastbound Rock Island freight train No. 90 tore out the bridge wrecking the train. The locomotive turned over after clearing the bridge, injuring two of the engine crew. Six cars went into the river, and 13 others were wrecked. Four transients riding in box cars were injured and narrowly escaped death. One man was reported missing.” Elsewhere three men were injured when lightning struck the grain and coal elevator at Rockwell City, with one of the men dying from his injuries about a week later. In Des Moines and surrounding areas the storms injured 5 people as strong winds blew tree limbs down across the city knocking out electrical service.
