On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 2012: An EF2 tornado hits Creston with peak winds of 130mph, injuring 10. The tornado’s path length was 14 miles.

1987 – A storm system moving slowly northeastward across the Middle Mississippi Valley produced severe thunderstorms which spawned three tornadoes around Ottumwa IA, and produced up to four inches of rain in southeastern Nebraska, flooding rivers and streams. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1980: A late season widespread snowfall primarily affected southeastern and eastern Iowa with reported accumulations including 5.0 inches at Bloomfield, Keokuk, and Manchester, 6.0 inches at Burlington, Iowa City, and Williamsburg, and 7.0 inches at Mount Pleasant. This was the second snow storm in only a few days in southeastern Iowa, where Albia would finish the month with 17.0 inches of snowfall and Sigourney 15.0 inches, making this the second-snowiest April on record at both of those locations only behind April of 1973. Remarkably, record breaking heat would follow only a week later with Fort Dodge and Waterloo breaking the all-time Iowa April record by reaching 100 F on the 22nd.

1886: At least 19 tornadoes touched down across Iowa with several of these producing significant damage. One tornado produced F4 damage, killing 3 people and injuring 18 others as it traveled from near Griswold in Cass County through Audubon and Guthrie counties before destroying most of Coon Rapids and dissipating near Churdan. Another tornado produced F3 damage in Taylor and Adams counties injuring at least 15 people. Further north there were also several significant tornadoes in Minnesota including an F4 that struck Saint Cloud, killing 72 people and injuring more than 200.
