On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 2000: Very warm early March weather across Iowa resulted in Mason City and Spencer each setting daily high temperature records on five consecutive days, from March 4-8, with most locations around the state experiencing daytime temperatures around 20 degrees above normal during that span. The warmest temperatures were recorded on the 7th when afternoon highs included 77 F at Spencer, 79 F at Des Moines and Mason City, 80 F at Keosauqua and Muscatine, and 81 F at Mount Pleasant.

1990: One of the worst ice storms in the last several decades struck much of western, central, and northern Iowa. Accumulations ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 inches across most of this area with 3.0 inches of ice reported in Crawford and Carroll counties. The ice downed 78 electrical towers in a 17 mile stretch near Boone and produced incredible tree damage and costing three electric utilities fifteen million dollars. Total damage from the storm was more than fifty million dollars. Approximately 270,000 were without power in the Des Moines metro area at the height of the storm, which was about two thirds of the metro population at that time. Power took more than a week to restore in some rural areas. This storm kicked off a wild stretch of weather in early to mid March of 1990 that saw the significant ice storm followed by several severe weather and tornado outbreaks then a big snow storm, all in a nine day stretch.
