On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 1910: A very warm and pleasant March and early April transitioned into a very cold and erratic couple of weeks, with multiple rounds of snow and severe freezing temperatures between April 15th and 26th followed by record breaking heat on the 28th. The magnitude and duration of freezing temperatures were unprecedented for so late in the season and significant damage was done to trees, shrubs, fruit, and garden vegetables across Iowa. The plants that managed to survive the cold and snow of the 15th-18th were almost completely destroyed by the hard freezes of the 23rd-25th, with more than 90 percent of the fruit crop annihilated by the end of the month. Many stations reported that the blossoms and leaves on trees were frozen black and that by the end of the month the trees were shedding their leaves as if it were autumn. Even in far southeastern Iowa an observer at Keokuk wrote that “the forest trees, which were in full leaf, are wilted and the leaves are falling.” On the 23rd many locations in northeastern Iowa remained below freezing through the day and at Elma an observer noted that “snow fell all day with high northwest wind, which drifted the snow and made regular blizzard conditions.” At Dubuque the high temperature on the 23rd was only 30 F and the low temperature on the morning of the 24th was 23 F with ice up to an inch thick forming in tubs of standing water. Other low temperatures on the 24th included 22 F at Burlington, Clinton, Sibley, and Washington, 21 F at Albia, Delaware, and Fort Dodge, and 20 F at Storm Lake. Amazingly, temperatures would warm significantly a few days later with Inwood recording a high temperature of 99 F on the 28th.
