    On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 1894: The latter half of the Summer was extremely hot and dry across Iowa. It was noted as one of the driest years on record to that time, and the prospect for corn was reduced from a condition of 107 percent of normal on July 1 to an actual yield of only 12 bushels per acre by the harvest. At Des Moines only 0.29 inches of rain fell between July 1 and August 10. On August 7 high temperatures were near 100 degrees across the state, a grain elevator burned down after sparks started a fire in Decorah, and a child died from heat stroke near Hesper.
