On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 1975: Unseasonably cold weather brought record breaking temperatures to most of Iowa with many stations setting all-time marks for cold in the month of April. Most of the western half of Iowa dropped below 10 degrees with Des Moines reporting an April record low temperature of 9 F. A few stations in northwestern Iowa not only set new April record lows, but also marked the latest date of the year on which they have ever dropped below zero. These included -1 F at Hawarden and -2 F at Le Mars and Sioux City, with the latter breaking its prior April low temperature record by a full 10 degrees. Even in southwestern Iowa Oakland dropped all the way to zero and Corning reported a low temperature of 3 F.

1910: A small tornado touched down briefly in northern Des Moines near Kingman Avenue shortly after 11 pm resulting in considerable damage to several residences and other structures. The damage path was very narrow, in some places only a couple of houses wide, and only about 400 feet long. There were no reported injuries.
