On This Date in Iowa Weather History (courtesy of the NWS): 2008: Record flooding continued in central and eastern Iowa with all-time record crests occurring on the Des Moines River at Des Moines, the Iowa River at Marshalltown, and the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids where the crest of 31.12 shattered the previous record crest of 20 which was set in 1851 and tied in 1929, and the flow rate nearly doubled the previous record which was set in 1961. Large sections of Cedar Rapids were inundated including much of the downtown area as well as many city government buildings and utility infrastructure sites. Thousands were displaced from their homes and some buildings near the river were flooded up to their roofs.

1976: Significant severe weather struck parts of Iowa for the second consecutive day, famously producing an F5 tornado that devastated the small town of Jordan. A tornado that moved from near Washburn to Dewar, passing just north of Dunkerton in Black Hawk County, remarkably followed a path just a couple of miles from where another tornado had injured two children the previous day. Another storm produced hail up to golf ball size, 70 mph wind gusts, and several tornadoes in Cass, Shelby, and Audubon counties. The strongest storm moved across portions of Dallas, Boone, and Story counties where it produced multiple tornadoes that reportedly killed a total of more than 8,000 farm animals. The strongest of these was an F5 tornado that was on the ground for about an hour as it moved from southwest of Luther to Story City, annihilating the small town of Jordan and causing 9 injuries. This was the last F5 tornado to occur in Iowa until the Parkersburg storm 32 years later.
